What's Happening in B5: Week of 10-6-08
Reading: The weekly Home Reading Log will be coming home as homework on Monday, October 6. Students
are to read at least 120 minutes per week of self-selected materials. Students will fill in the
sections stating the Title, Pages (the ones they read during that session), and a Summary of what
they read. This paper will be due next Monday, October 13.
We have wrapped up the Reading portion of Fairy Tales, where students learned all the
characteristics of fairy tales. We also worked with the elements of a story, concentrating on a
story map, which included Title, Characters, Setting, 3 Events, Problem/Goal, Solution/Resolution.
Now students are going to use what they've learned in Reading to create their own fairy tales in
Writing.
Writing/Language: Each student will create his/her own fairy tale this week. This weekend, students
were to have shown their parents the story maps they started last Friday. By week's end, we hope to
have completed our rough drafts and most of the editing.
Spelling: We are in Unit 4. The words are on this website on the "Lists" page. Also, check out the
"Links to Class Work" page, where you will find a link to Spelling City. The directions for finding
a list are above the link to the website. The test over words and sentences is on Thursday.
Math: This week we will try to finish Chapters 2 and 3, where we are reviewing Addition and
Subtraction. At the end of Chapter 3, there will be a test over the first three chapters of the
book. My goal is to try to finish this week and have the test early next week. As the week and our
Math work progress, students will write the test date in their organizers.
Also in Math, we will continue to take two Facts Tests per week. The best grade each week will be
recorded in the grade book.
Social Studies: We will continue our study of Texas and its regions.
Student Council: Congratulations to Jack and Ashton, who were elected as B5's Student Council
Representatives. This coming Friday, Oct. 10, will be the election of Student Council officers.
Fifth and sixth grade representatives are running for office, and we've seen their posters
throughout the school. The election will be held in the gym.
