4th Grade Parent Orientation
September 15, 2009

CLASS SCHEDULE
- See “Our Class Schedule” on each teachers’ website.

CONFERENCES
- Both of us have the same conference time (9:30 - 10:00).   If you ever need to meet with us, please call the front office to schedule a conference.  (281) 482-0111.
E-mail addresses: djohansen@fisdk12.net and lschuchmann@fisdk12.net

ORGANIZERS
- We are asking that parents look at organizers each evening.  Homework is indicated in the organizer daily. Students not writing their assignments daily may receive a conduct mark on their Discipline Sheets, as this is something they are asked and expected to do as they enter each class.

4TH GRADE HOMEWORK POLICY
– Any assignment that is not finished in class will be considered homework and is due the following day, and that assignment will be noted in your child’s organizer.

    Ongoing homework:
Math
: Students should know their math facts: multiplication through x12, and addition and subtraction through 20. Students need to practice their facts nightly if they do not have them memorized.

Spelling
: class time is limited for Spelling, and parents should expect a small amount of homework each night. Students receive their lists on Friday, so over the weekend, they can begin studying the words for the following week. On Monday and Tuesday nights, students will have a written homework assignment. On Wednesday night, students should study for the test on Thursday. There is a word test and a sentence test each Thursday.

Reading
: Students should read for pleasure at least fifteen minutes each night!

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
- All late assignments will have 11 points deducted from the score.  Your child will bring home a Late Slip notice for you to sign.  The work and the Late Slip notice must be returned the following morning by 8:15 or the resulting grade will be a zero.  If the student does not return the Late Slip signed by a parent the following day, the student will receive a discipline mark. If the student doesn't return the slip the second day, parents will be contacted and a lunch detention will be assigned.

If a student receives a 5th Late Slip in a nine-week period, they will be assigned a lunch detention. For a 6th Late Slip, an office referral will be made and a student may receive an after school detention. Upon receiving a 7th Late Slip in the same nine weeks, a Saturday detention may be assigned.

It is our hope that students will learn the responsibility and work ethic necessary for their education.

CORRECT AND RETURN PAPERS
- Daily grades less than a 70 may be corrected and returned for a possible improved score.  Both the original and corrected grade may be averaged together for a maximum of 70 points. Our 4th grade policy states it is the teacher’s discretion as to the change in grade.

These papers generally will come home in the Tuesday folder and need to be completed and returned to the teacher. It is not an optional assignment.

TUTORIALS
- Tutorials will be offered for those with failing or near failing grades, and are by teacher invitation only.  Your child must have a pass from the teacher for morning tutorials, or they will not be allowed out of the cafeteria.

    Math: Friday 7:40 a.m. or Thursday 3:15 - 3:45
    Reading: Tuesday 7:40 a.m. or Wednesday 3:15 - 3:45
    Science/Social Studies:  as needed

ABSENCES
- No work will be sent home prior to a child’s absence.

DISCIPLINE SHEETS
- The Discipline Sheet travels with your child from class to class, so that there is consistency between the two of us teachers. Your child’s conduct grade will come directly from the number of marks given by each teacher over the 9 weeks period. Students are responsible for keeping up with their Discipline Sheets; it stays with your child on his/her clipboard. If they should lose it, they will receive a second one, along with a conduct mark. This sheet comes home on Tuesday, and is attached to the green parent signature card. Please sign both.

TUESDAY FOLDERS
- Papers will come home each Tuesday in the blue folder.  Keep all papers at home as a record of your child’s grades for the 9 weeks.  Sign the green card stating that you did see your child’s work, and also sign the green discipline sheet.

In the “Return” side of the folder will be the green card and discipline sheet. Often there are other items in that side of the folder. Please check carefully and return those as well. Thanks!

We look forward to a fantastic year with your child!  Please call or send us a note any time you have a concern.  Our communication is vital to your child’s success.
