The reading requirement outside of our classroom reading will work on a point system. Students will choose any chapter book they wish for independent reading including books from the library, home, or the classroom library that are 3rd grade level or higher. Students will have the option of taking an AR computer quiz on the book if the book is an AR (Accelerated Reader) book, or writing a 1 page summary book report if the book is not an AR book. AR books are automatically assigned computer generated points based on the reading level of the book and the number of questions answered correctly on the quiz. Non AR books will earn points based on the following scale: Book Report Point Scale 100 pgs. = 2 pts. 200 pgs = 3 pts. 300 pgs. = 4 pts. 400 pgs. = 5 pts. Students will have 9 weeks to complete 10 points. Those with 10 accumulated points by the designated date will participate in a special AR Reward. The points will also be counted as ONE reading grade within the 9 week period. 10 pts = 100, 9 pts. = 90, 8 pts. = 80, etc... My goal is to see students spending more time independently reading! They are not required to choose books of different genres. They should choose books they are interested in reading, and be reading more pages. The kids are excited about this point system, and I think we will see them reading more! Mrs. Holbert
