Hello Parents! Thank you for supporting foreign language learning at Dawson
Middle School! While this course is offered in 8th grade, it is extremely
important to understand that it is taught as a high school credit class.
Although technically an elective, it should warrant as much attention as any
core class in terms of outside studying. Your support is the most important
key to a successful year of Spanish for your child. Here are some helpful
hints to support your middle schooler's success in Spanish:
*Check this website frequently to stay on top of assignments and be aware of
upcoming tests/quizzes. (Especially if your child has been absent!)
*Ask questions about what's happening in Spanish class and have them
teach/explain it to YOU!
*Practice verb/vocabulary drills with them. [This is a good way to study for
Spelling Quizzes.]
*Make FLASH-CARDS! These are so useful! You can take them anywhere to study
(like in the car on the way to sports practice!)
*Help your child practice his/her vocabulary! Your child regularly says (and
hears), "¿Cómo se dice_______?" For example if we're learning body parts,
you could say, "¿Cómo se dice 'leg' en español? [which means "how do you say
leg in Spanish?"] .... pronunciation: 'co-mo say dee-say'
*Encourage them to listen to or watch Spanish t.v. and radio. While they
might not understand every word, it will be a good workout for their ears as
they pick up the rhythm of the language and probably even a few cognates.
Better yet, ask them to tell you all the Spanish/English cognates they know!
*Also encourage them to practice their Spanish any time they are presented
with the opportunity! (i.e. with a waiter at a Mexican restaurant [Mi
Cocina, Taco Diner & Anamia's are great ones to try!])
* Encourage study-buddies and study groups. Working with their Spanish
classmates/peers is a great tool for success!
*Help your child avoid distractions while studying. (i.e. telephone, t.v.,
instant messanger, cell phone)
