FLU INFORMATION
TYPICAL SIGNS of seasonal or swine flu in children include high-grade fever up to 104 degrees F (40 degrees C), chills, muscle aches, headaches, sore throat, dry cough, and just plain feeling sick. Swine flu may also cause vomiting and diarrhea. These flu symptoms usually last for 3 to 4 days, but cough and tiredness may linger for up to 2 weeks after the fever has gone away. Other family members or close contacts often have a similar illness.
At this point our best defense at the center is diligent personal hygiene for the children as well as staff. Some of you have inquires about liquid hand sanitizers for the children. While we previously have not been able to allow normal liquid hand sanitizers because of their very high alcohol content, we have been able to purchase non- alcohol versions from a medical supply company and they are already in use throughout the center.
I ask that you follow the link http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/ to review the information, and keep a watchful eye on your children, Additionally, refrain from sending your child to school if they are not feeling well and have them seen by their doctor. The state has provided us with a new FORM for children showing symptoms so please understand our need to strictly enforce our illness policies at this time as we all do our part to lessen the spread of this flu.

Our Teachers' Commitment to Professional Growth
St. Helen Early Childhood Staff recently took part in the Texas Association for the Education of Young Children's yearly conference from Sept. 24-26 in Galveston. The teachers participated in many workshops on topics ranging from Curriculum to Health and Safety. I see many new techniques being applied with great success already. Hats off to Mrs. Ruth Patterson and Mrs.Faby Lopez for also enhancing their commitment to childrens education by acting as facilitators for the weekend as well. On the topic of kuddos, congratulations to our own Mrs. Faby Lopez who will be presenting two teacher workshops on Math and Science at the Diocesan Early Childhood Conference on October 2. Mrs. Lopez is a registered trainer with the State of Texas.
