| The following lab activities are due Thursday (April 3):
(These lab reports need to be in your lab notebook.)
(1) "Watt's the Cost?"
-- Objectives
-- Introduction
-- Data Sheet #1 (Columns A to G)
-- Data Sheet #2 (Columns H to N)
-- Answers to questions at the end of the lab. Be sure to write the
questions.
(2) "Air Pollution Assay"
-- Objectives (page 2)
-- Materials included in the kit (page 3)
-- Answers to the following pre-lab questions:
(Be sure to write the questions or you can write the answers in
complete answers.)
A) Describe the relationship between fungus and algae in the lichen.
B) Briefly describe the type of lichen used in the kit.
C) Explain why lichens are sensitive to air pollutants.
D) Explain what happens when lichens accumulate too much cations from
the environment.
E) What are some examples of primary sources of air pollutants
containing heavy metals(e.g. copper, lead, manganese, nickel and
zinc)?
F) How do lichens help humans and the environment?
G) How do lichens trap heavy metals from the air? (hint: look at
interpretation of results)
-- Table 1. Intensity of Color Leached from Lichen Disks
-- Table 2. Expected Results of Color Intensity Leached from Lichen Disks
-- Conclusion -- 1)Explain why some metal solutions caused methylene blue
to leach from the lichen disks. 2) Was there a relationship between
the valence of the metal cation and the amount of leaching?
