Reading Skills Games (NEW)

Readers . . . Are Thinkers And Dreamers

Creating the Reading Skills Games in groups at the end of the school year allows students to show their creativity and apply knowledge gained throughout the fifth-grade year:

Each student receives an Echo Word (Reading Vocabulary) at the beginning the year.

Students study reading skills through reading in pairs and groups, reading from the basal, working in literature circles, participating in interactive reading skills units, and by using supplemental resources such as the Measuring Up Reading and Curriculum Associates CARS & STARS Reading Comprehension series.

Students study and take numerous quizzes on the Reading Notes Study Sheet after the first semester of studies.

Students work in cooperative groups throughout the year, which prepares them to work on the reading skills games. Group size ranges from 3 - 5 students for each game.

The board for each game is made from a letter size manila file folder (11 pt. stock).
Other supplies for the project include map colors, markers, crayons, Sharpies, glue, cardstock (for making dice or playing pieces), and baggies (to store small game parts and pieces).

Reading Skills used in the games on the slideshow include: Main Idea, Character, Context Clues, Author's Purpose, Fact/Opinion, Setting, Cause/Effect, Sequence, Problem, and Inference.

After students create the Reading Skills Games, they should play the game to work out any problems or inconsistencies. When students are satisfied with their games, allow classmates to play the game. Voting on the favorite or best game can be fun too!
