Accelerated Reader

Readers are leaders! Readers are in the KNOW!

About Accelerated Reader:

Accelerated Reader is a computer software-reading program with goals of motivating the readers to read quality books and of improving students’ reading comprehension. Teachers and parents encourage students to select and read library or personal books at their reading level from our Accelerated Reader list and take computer tests on these books. The AR program scores the tests, gives individual points to the student according to the reading level of the book, and shows the student the items missed on the test for immediate feedback.

Accelerated Reader Grades: A daily grade for points earned along with a percent correct grade for quiz scores will be averaged into the reading grade for each six week period. 5 ps = 100%; 4 pts = 90%; 3 pts = 80%; 2 pts = 70%; 1 pt = 50%  --

How it works:

First – Student reads a book. Students choose books at their appropriate reading levels and read them at their own pace.

Second – Student Takes a Quiz. Accelerated Reader provides quizzes to help motivate students and to monitor reading practice.

Third – Students, Parents, and Teachers receive information. The program gives immediate information feedback on the reading comprehension progress of each student.

How do students keep up with their AR information?

Students keep a folder where they log their book titles, authors, points, and dates.

What is the purpose?

The purpose of AR is not to provide reading instruction. Rather, its purpose is to help motivate students to read more books at an appropriate level of difficulty by using a point system tied to goals.

What determines a students reading level or ZPD (zone of proximal development)?

Students take STAR-Reading tests at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year to track annual progress.

How many questions are on the quizzes?

AR software provides comprehension tests featuring five to 20 multiple-choice questions.

Ideal Percent Correct?

Ideally, students will score 85% correct or above on all quizzes. Reading on level along with careful reading makes this possible.

How does AR help teachers?

Teachers are able to generate various reports on their students to monitor their reading progress. These reports will be sent periodically or upon request to parents to inform them of their children's reading progress.

What type of information do the reports provide?

The technology provides test scores, points earned, and records in order to help teachers and parents manage and track a student’s attempt to reach his or her goal. The test gives immediate feedback in terms of the number of points earned based on the point value assigned the book and the number of correct answers on the test.

Points and Scores Example:

For a book worth 10 AR points, the student would receive 10 points for a score of 100 percent, 9 points for 90 percent, and so on. However, the student must score at least 60 percent to earn any points.

When can students take quizzes?

After reading on level books, students may take quizzes any day at school Monday through Friday (including during recess, computer class, and library period) The Accelerated Reader program is available on all student and teacher workstations.

Most Importantly . . .

Students take pride in their reading accomplishments and are therefore motivated to experience many classic, award winning, or quality children’s books for themselves, which they might not otherwise have come to know.
