November 2009
November 24th
For November 30th, please read to the end of chapter 5 in The Outsiders.
Also due November 30th--finish reading your independent book and BE READY to
write on the following assigned topic IN CLASS (please come with notes ready
to write):
In an essay that includes an introduction, a body, and a conclusion, do the
following:
Choose a character from your novel and then think of a situation that
particular character is in where you personally would behave or act
differently. For example, using the novel Stargirl, maybe you would take the
character of Leo and explain how and why you would have accepted Stargirl
instead of trying to change her into "Susan."
Some tips:
1) Make sure you state your position briefly in your introduction. Your body
should then back up your stated position.
2) DO NOT RETELL THE STORY! You may be tempted to simply re-tell everything
that happened in the story. Do not do this. I want your own opinions and
thoughts. You may have to re-tell tiny portions of the story for your essay to
make sense. That is okay.
3) I like evidence and examples from the novel, other novels, your life--in
other words, details that PROVE AND SUPPORT YOUR POINT.
4) Of course, spelling, grammar, and punctuation count. Make sure you indent
all your paragraphs. Do not skip lines between paragraphs.
