What can I expect for homework in 5th grade?

Homework will be a regular part of the 5th grade curriculum. It will be
purposeful, reasonable in amount, and an extension of prior learning.
Students will have math, language, and spelling assignments almost every day
except Fridays. Students will be expected to read 20 minutes at home each day
and keep track of their minutes read on a monthly reading calendar. At the
end of each month, this calendar is to be signed by a parent and returned to
me within the first week of the new month.

Sometimes students will complete their assignments during school. Anything
not completed during class will become homework and will need to be finished
at home that night and returned to school the next day.

What are the day planners?

Your child will receive a day planner in which they are to record all daily
homework assignments. On Thursdays your child will have a behavior note
attached to their day planner. This note summarizes their academic progress
and behavior throughout the week. It needs to be signed by a parent and
returned on Friday. Students with signed behavior notes will be entered in a
weekly drawing. If a student does not have their behavior note, or it is not
signed, they will stay in for afternoon recess each day until it is returned
with a signature.

Any child who loses his/her day planner must pay to replace it.

Students who come to class with unfinished homework will not be allowed to go
to recess. They will stay in for additional instruction and time to work on
missing assignments.

What is the late work policy?

Late work will be accepted up to five days after an assignment is due for
partial credit. After five days, NO credit will be given; however, there will
be a few exceptions and they are as follows: excused absences (illness),
extreme emergencies, and/or if a child is failing and approaches me with a
sincere desire to boost their grade. Students will be notified of missing
assignments in class. Parents can also check PowerSchool to see what
assignments their child is missing.

What is the attendance policy?

Students are expected to be in their seats at their starting time or they will
be marked as tardy. Students who miss a day are expected to find out what
they missed (ask a student, talk to me, or check the homework board) and
complete the assignment within a week. Students who miss consecutive days
are expected to meet with me before or after school to review assignments and
receive a due date. If a student knows beforehand they will miss consecutive
days, they may ask for their assignments before missing school. For
additional information, see the Suncrest Reference Book.
