                                 ALGEBRA 1

Welcome to another year of mathematics, 2008/2009. This year the students
will be studying elementary algebra, the first year of algebra in a series
of classes of algebra. At the end of this year, all students will need to
show they are ready for geometry. Two ways to do this is to pass the
C.R.T.'s or have a grade average of at least a B-. The C.R.T.'s
will be given the first part of May. At the end of May, students will know
their CRT results. If student does not satisfy the above criteria, parents
will need to deside if their child needs to repete the math class they are
taking. Every effort will be made to keep this webwage up to date each
year. This year I gave my students two tests the first and second days of
the quarter. For algebra classes, an arithmetic test was given to see what
deficiencies students have in basic operations. There is a definite need to
review the fundamentals of arithmetic. The other test is designed to
identify the probability that a student will be successful in algebra.
Each student will need to be modivated to be successful. Extra effort or
tutoring may be needed to make these students successful. Students may come
after school either Mondays or Wednesdays for help. If students are not
being successful, a letter may be sent home to encourage certain students
take advantage of this help.

I am trying to continue a fundraising activity this year. It is called
Boxtops 4 Education. If you would like to help raise money for math
materials, mathcounts supplies and academic games supplies, just access the
information from the webpage, "boxtops4education.com". To get information,
be part of the fundraising, receive e-mails and to receive free
coupons, enter the correct catagory on this webpage. Please support us in
these efforts. We need you to remember our needs when you purchase food
products or other normal family products. There is no cost to you above the
cost of the item you would normally buy.

Press at my "Box Tops 4 Education" icon for up to date information. It will
be made available.

It has been pointed out that a large percent of the students in my
algebra calsses are not showing their work. This information was given to
Mr. Bingham by my substitute. Please check with your child to varify that
he/she is showing the required work. Grades will be affected if this is to
continue!

**EXTRA CREDIT**
Go to "Extra Credit - Problem Solving" for extra credit problems. Turn
in your answers in the Blue Box, with your name and period. New problems
will appear each week, so good luck with your effort

                  **Curriculum Goals for Algebra Classes"
Students need to know the curriculum that is included in the "Elementary
Algebra" goals, to pass the Algebra CRT at the end of this school year. The
CRT will count a large percent of each students fourth quarter grade. 50%
of the fourth quarter test score catagory.

                               Elementary Algebra
Prerequisite: Mastery of Pre-algebra
Course Description
Students in Elementary Algebra will learn algebra as a style of thinking for
formalizing patterns, functions, and generalizations. In this course,
students will expand previously learned quantitative rational number
relationships to include the irrational numbers. The focus will be on
proficiency in recognizing and working effectively with linear relationships
and their corresponding representations in tables, graphs, and equations;
such proficiency includes competence in solving linear equations, generating
equivalent expressions, using formulas, and applying proportionality. To
help develop proficiency in symbolic and graphical representations, students
will use physical models, visual models, and technology. While mathematical
skills will be developed, teaching will focus on the understanding of
concepts in depth, enabling students to apply mathematical skills

Students in my algebra classes are studying the following core curriculum
area. Students should be able to understand each goal and work the
appropriate problems
