Class Policies and Grading:
Eighth Grade Integrated Science
Mr .Miller
Grading will be done on a point total basis. The point total will be set by
the top student the classes. Half of that total will set the failing mark.
Points will be acquired through:
tests -60 to 80 pts.
quizzes -10 to 20 pts.
labs -25 pts. each
homework -25 to 50 pts.
In full 5 day weeks we should be completing one chapter. The chapter will be
assigned for reading on the first day. Homework will be assigned the following
day and will be due on the fifth day. One or more "pop" quizzes may be given
after the reading has been assigned. If a lab is done during the week it will
be due the day after it is completed in class. Extra credit will be offered
occasionally (80 pts. the first term, 60 pts. the next, 40 pts. the next, and
20 pts. the final term)
Hall Passes -Two hall passes are allowed each student per term. After they are
used, no pass will be given for any reason (barring emergency). The students
will be required to mark used hall passes in the agenda planner and get my
signature before leaving the room.
Rules of the Class:
Students will respect their classmates and give them an opportunity to learn
in the class.
Students will bring all needed supplies to class everyday.
Students will raise their hands and wait to be called upon before speaking in
class
Students will be seated when the bell rings and will not leave their seats at
the end of class until they are dismissed.
Results of Breaking Rules:
1st offense -verbal warning
2nd offense -30 sec. held after class
3rd offense -1 min. held after class
4th offense -15 min. held after school
5th offense -sent to the vice principal and an 8th period issued
Severe or excessive disturbances will be sent to the office immediately
Class Policies:
Tardies -beginning with the third tardy of any term, each unexcused tardy will
result in a lowering of the students citizenship grade to no higher than a 2:
with 4 tardies the grade will be reduced to a 1 and on the 5th tardy the
student will receive a 0 citizenship grade. For any and all tardies after the
second in a term the student will receive an 8th period as well. Parents will
be called on the third tardy.
Unexcused absences - District policy provided in the agenda planner
Excused Absences -It is the student's responsibility to find out about and
make up missed work due to excused absences. They should acquire a phone
number of at least one other student in class in order to keep informed of
assignments and reading they may miss due to illnesses of one or two days
durations. If the student is absent on the day an assignment is due that
assignment will be due the day of the student's return. If a student misses a
quiz due to absence then the points used to make up that score will be given
through some form of alternative chapter work or, at the student's request, it
may be made up through extra credit points. The first missed quiz score will
be excused with no make up activity .If a student is in school for any period
of time during the day that an assignment is due in the class, they are
expected to turn in the assignment regardless of their attendance in class for
that day. Extended excused absences will be dealt with on an individual basis
upon the students return to school.
Late Work -full credit is given for work turned in late due to excused
absences. This work should be turned in upon the students arrival back in
school after a one or two day absence. Late work will receive 1 \2 credit if
turned the day after it is due. No credit will be given after that.
Honesty -Students are expected to do their own work, including homework.
Copying of any assignment is considered cheating and will result in the loss
of points on that assignment. Cheating on tests and quizzes will result in a O
for that test or quiz as well as a O citizenship mark for that term.
Class Materials -Students will be required to bring a notebook to class every
day and will be expected to take and keep organized notes from ciass lectures.
Also the students should bring their planner and something to write with
daily. Back packs will not be allowed in class, however students will not
need to bring their text to class. The book which will be issued to the
student at the beginning of the year is to go home, and remain there until we
have finished with that material. There will be a class set of textbooks which
students can use during class time.
Student's scores in this class will be entered into the school's grading
system. Therefore, they will be available to parents and students through the
Granite School District's web site. The scores and corresponding grade will be
renewed on a weekly basis. This means that the grade and scores which will
appear on the Internet should be no more than one week behind class work.
Exceptions to this policy may be lengthy or major assignments, such as a term
paper, which may take longer than a week to correct. Student's attendance and
tardies will also be available on this site.
If a student is absent and would like to know what the assignment is for that
week he/she will be able to find these and the dates they are due by
consulting my web page at the Granite School District's web sight. To get to
this site just enter www.granite.kl2.ut.us then select Wasatch
Junior High teacher pages. You will be able to E-mail me through this page as
well.
