Math Workshop – Our math program is structured around the goals from the
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. These goals are:
1. Students will become problem solvers.
2. Students will learn to communicate mathematically.
3. Students will learn to reason mathematically.
4. Students will value mathematics.
5. Students will become confident in their own ability.
Solving mathematical problems in the real world is the heart of math
instruction in first grade. Students need opportunities to investigate,
ponder, and reason about relationships between numbers, computation
strategies, and the big ideas of mathematics. Children are easily engaged in
solving problems that relate to their experiences at home and school.
During Math Workshop we:
* Have Math Talks (mental math).
* Collect data.
* Participate in Calendar Math.
* Have large and small group instruction.
* Have time for individual practice.
* Play math games.
* Participate in investigations.
