November is full of excitement in Second Grade! We've learned so much about the Plains Indians, and we'll soon be wrapping up this unit. This month we'll begin learning about the Native Americans of the Southwest. We'll make a model pueblo, weave a small carpet, and make coil pots! We'll certainly need parent volunteers for this unit's projects ;) This month we'll discuss the importance of a Muslim's civic duties in the United States. We'll talk about the election process, and U.S. government. How different is this system to that of many Native American Tribes, and how similar? Our scientific investigation has led us from magnets to weather, and now leads us to plate movements and tectonics. The connections from one topic to the next make this a interesting and curious subject for our students. Most children have thought of volcanoes and earthquakes as extreme "weather" phenomenon, but never explored what causes these massive events. They'll soon learn that these amazing forces of nature are not weather related at all, but are the result of constant movement of Earth's continental plates! Have you received your child's letter about our current Math chapter? It explains that we're learning about Place Value. Concepts in this chapter include understanding the ones and tens place value, odd and even numbers, and regrouping tens as ones, among other concepts. This chapter has proven to be a challenge to many students so be sure to sit with your child during homework time to answer any questions they may have. The Chapter 2 test will be in the third week of November (date TBA). November Reminders: *Wednesdays are Market Days at Al-Fatih. Don't forget to send $1-$2 in your child's money pouch for purchases *If your child has ordered pizza on Mondays please continue to send in a snack and drink for them.
