![]() Homework & Discipline PoliciesHomework Policy:
Homework is an important extension of the school day which allows students to work with and apply what we have learned in school. According to AFA guidelines printed in the handbook, 3rd graders can expect a total of 50 minutes of homework, 25 minutes from me and 25 more from Arabic/Qur'an. Within this guideline, some days will have more homework than others, and sometimes students have more than one day to complete a particular homework assignment. Students and parents need to take an active role in budgeting their time in order to complete homework in a timely manner. Please let me know if your child is struggling with the amount of homework assigned.
Several homework assignments, including spelling and Scholastic Magazines, are regular and ongoing. Please refer to the homework page of the class website for more details on those.
Homework is due in the morning on the day it is due. Students turn homework in as they unpack. If students do not have the homework completed on time (or if they forget it), they owe me a 5 minute timeout at recess, and they are still responsible for completing it. If you as the parent let me know (by the morning it was due) that there is any kind of problem in completing the work, I will give you more time and the student will not have time out. If homework is consistenly not completed or not turned in, I will contact the parents.
Assignments are usually given a check, a check plus or a check minus. Occasionally, I will not evaluate a particular assignment with the check, check plus or check minus system. Students report card grades will depend on the overall mix of these individual grades.
Discipline Policy:
My discipline policy is designed to help students recognize, correct and control their own behavior so that every student in our class can enjoy a peaceful, safe and productive environment. At this age, I believe students know what they need to do, and just need occasional reminders to do it. My policy follows AFA guidelines in all respects.
If a student engages in inappropriate behavior (such as talking out of turn, being overly distracting, talking to classmates too much, not doing work, or whining), I place a yellow colored popsicle stick on his or her desk. This is to serve as a warning that the behavior needs to be corrected. If the behavior improves, I remove the stick. If the behavior does not improve, or if it worsens, I place a red colored popsicle stick on his or her desk. This is a stronger warning, and I will usually verbalize what the student needs to do. If the behavior improves, I remove the stick. If the behavior persists, or gets even worse, I place a black stick on the student's desk, and the student will owe me a 5 minute timeout. For some behaviors, such as being rude to another student, I will go directly to the black stick.
I talk to students about what happened and why they are in timeout. If inapproprite behavior becomes a pattern, or if the infraction is severe, I will contact the parents and/or administration.
Tardiness:
Due to the nature of our class schedule this year, we start math instruction right away at 9:05. Please make every effort to bring your child to school on time.
The best way to get in touch with me about any school-related questions is to email me at araheem@alfatih.org (new address). You can also send a note with your child.
