STUDENT COUNSELING GOALS
(K-12)

Academic Development
•  To acquire the attitudes, knowledge, and skills that contribute to effective life-long
    learning
•  To complete school with the academic preparation essential to choose from a wide range
    of post-secondary educational and training options
•  To understand the relationship of academics to the world of work, to life at home, and to
    life in the community

Career Development
•  To investigate the world of work in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed
    career decisions
•  To develop and explore strategies to achieve future career goals
•  To understand the relationships among personal qualities, education, training, and the
    world of work

Personal/Social Development
•  To understand the importance of interpersonal skills and respect of self and others
•  To make decisions, set goals, and take necessary action to achieve goals
•  to develop life skills for personal growth

Grade Seven Developmental Characteristics

Academic

•  Study habits and organizational skills
•  Test-taking skills
•  Academic program planning
•  Time management skills
•  Orientation to choices such as Specialty Centers, Technical Centers, International
    Baccalaureate Programs, etc.

Career
•  Identification of and development of an awareness of personal abilities, skills, interests,
    and motivations
•  Comprehension of the importance of responsibility, dependability, integrity, teamwork,
    and problem solving in the workplace
•  Awareness of the variety of traditional, nontraditional, and technical occupations
•  Awareness of how present personal, social, and academic choices affect future career
    opportunities

Personal/Social
•  Distinction between appropriate and inappropriate behavior
•  Comprehension of consequences of decisions and choices
•  Recognition and respect of individual and cultural differences and alternative points of
   view
•  Application of conflict resolution to everyday problems
•  Enhancement of coping skills
•  Development of positive peer interactions
