8th Grade School Counseling News

Greetings All 8th Grade Students and Families,

As you are progressing through your final year of middle school, it is hard to believe that we are three months into the school year. 

STUDENT COUNSELING GOALS
(K-12)

Academic Development
•  To acquire the attitudes, knowledge, and skills that contribute to effective life-long
    learning
•  To complete school with the academic preparation essential to choose from a wide range
    of post-secondary educational and training options
•  To understand the relationship of academics to the world of work, to life at home, and to
    life in the community

Career Development
•  To investigate the world of work in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed
    career decisions
•  To develop and explore strategies to achieve future career goals
•  To understand the relationships among personal qualities, education, training, and the
    world of work

Personal/Social Development
•  To understand the importance of interpersonal skills and respect of self and others
•  To make decisions, set goals, and take necessary action to achieve goals
•  to develop life skills for personal growth

Grade Eight Developmental Characteristics

•  Seeking independence
•  Attempting more responsibility
•  Beginning to see the future as a reality and showing more active participation in
   development of future plans
•  Expressing feelings openly, especially regarding fairness
•  Seeking own identity and role models
•  Beginning to understand the importance of considering needs of others but somewhat
   self-absorbed
•  Refining organizational skills
•   Desiring solitude, as well as enjoying increased time with peers
•  Developing confidence when performing in front of peers
Grade Eight Counseling Goals

Academic
•  Knowledge of academic strengths and interests
•  Test-taking skills
•  Academic program planning
•  Time management skills
•  Understanding of academic requirements in high school and beyond
•  Investigation of Specialty Centers and other high school options

Career
•  Identification and acknowledgment of personal strengths/interests
•  Comprehension of educational choices and the impact on career opportunities
•  Continued exploration of the world of work
•  Reinforcement of the importance of work attitudes, ethics, and social skills in the
   workplace

Personal/Social
•  Positive and realistic high school goal planning
•  Application of conflict resolution to everyday problems
•  Recognition and respect of individual and cultural differences
•  Development of personal qualities of responsibility, independence, interpersonal
   communication, and self-advocacy
