Mrs. Lemkul's Fifth Grade Class

Science Fair Project

All fifth grade students are required to do a science fair project. This
project will have several graded steps along the way. This sheet is a guide
for what is expected. The CAPITALIZED type is an actual grade component due
on that date.

TBD- Do research with library books or on the
internet for interesting science topics. One good website is
http://school.discovery.com. Then click on Science Fair Central.

TBD- Topic due. Write two or three sentences to tell me the
topic you are choosing for your project and why you chose it. What would you
like to find out more about this topic?

TBD- Research your topic for more understanding.
Decide what exactly you are going to test and form your purpose for your
project stated as the "Big Question". This will also act as the title of
your project:
Ex: Does planting grass seed help stop erosion?

TBD- "Big Question" due. (Along with the big question, two or more
resources need to be turned in on this date.)

TBD- Your research at this point will be to further
your knowledge so you can form a hypothesis for your "Big Question". Based
on what you have learned through your research, what do you think is the
answer to your question? Write your hypothesis. Usually a hypothesis is
written as "If..., then statements."
Ex. If I plant seed on bare soil, and allow it to grow, then when water is
sprinkled like rain, the soil will not erode.

TBD- Hypothesis due.

TBD- Use this time to write a list of materials
needed and the procedures for how you are going to conduct your experiment.
Your procedures should be listed as a step by step process so that if needed
(in the real world) another scientist could repeat your experiment and get
the same results. Remember everything has to stay the same except for the
one variable you are testing. You will want to have a comparison as well.
For the above example, the student would want to compare the water run off
in a container with the same amount of soil, tilted at the same height when
the water is sprinkled, to actually see the difference between one with
grass and one without. You may have to adjust your procedures as you
actually do your experiment and that's okay. Just remember to display the
procedures that worked.

TBD- List of materials and step by step procedures due.

TBD- Conduct your experiment (record data, make
graphs, etc.)

TBD- Work on display and presentation. (See Science Fair
Packet)

ALL PROJECTS ARE DUE ON TBD. Presentations will be done during
science class through remainder of the week.

The Bennett School Science Fair is TBD.
