First Quarter Science Portfolio Requirements

Your science portfolio for the first quarter must include the following:

  1. three articles from the newspaper, a magazine, or a website dealing with a science topic. Each article must be current (from September or October) and the source must be cited.  A copy of the article must be included in your portfolio.

For a magazine:

Author (last name first), "Article Title." Name of magazine. Volume number, (Date): page numbers.

Jordan, Jennifer, "Filming at the Top of the World." Museum of Science Magazine. Volume 47, No. 1, (Winter 1998): p. 11.

For a newspaper:

Author (last name first), "Article Title." Name of newspaper, city, state of publication. (date): edition if available, section, page number(s).

Powers, Ann, "New Tune for the Material Girl." The New York Times, New York, NY. (3/1/98): Atlantic Region, Section 2, p. 34.

World Wide Web:

URL (Uniform Resource Locator or WWW address). author (or item's name, if mentioned), date.

EXAMPLE: (Boston Globe's www address)

http://www.boston.com. Today's News, August 1, 1996.

  1. three separate observations of science in everyday life.  Each must be in paragraph form using standard English.  You may not use my example.

Example:  While swimming in the indoor pool, I noticed that the glass inside the pool was covered with water droplets.  The air inside was warm and very humid from the heated pool.  The air outside was cold.  These temperature differences led to water condensation on the   windows.  (http://artemis.austincollege.edu/acad/physics/dbaker/Courses/Portfolio/SciencePortfolio.htm)

  1. three scientific questions dealing with the world around you and propose a hypothesis for each.  Each must be written in sentences using standard English.   You may not use my example.

Example:

Question:      Why can birds sit on power lines but humans cannot?

Hypothesis:   It obviously has nothing to do with weight,

pressure, or moisture.  Maybe it has something to

do with the chemicals in our bodies. . .claws and

feathers must have a different chemical makeup.

  1. one assignment from your notebook which you believe is your best work.  Explain in at least three sentences what you learned from completing it.  The actual paper must be included in your portfolio.

  1. one assignment from your notebook which you believe you could improve.  Explain in at least three sentences how you would improve it if you did it again.  The actual paper must be included in your portfolio.

  1. completed self-assessment

  1. completed survey

  1. completed plan for an experiment (experimental design) to find out if the temperature of a bubble solution affects the how long the bubbles will last.

  1. Table of Contents for the portfolio must have a parent signature.

Science Survey

For the following items, rate your level of agreement using the following scale:

1                       2                      3                      4                      5                      6          7

Strongly                                               Neither Agree                                      Strongly

Disagree                                               Nor Disagree                                        Agree

Example: New York cheese tastes better than Wisconsin cheese.

1                       2                      3                      4                      5                      6          7

Strongly                                               Neither Agree                                      Strongly

Disagree                                               Nor Disagree                                        Agree

A Wisconsin dairy farmer might answer 1 for this item, a New York pizza chef might answer 7 for this item, and someone who doesn’t have a preference might answer 4.
