Kindergarten Handbook

School Supplies:

You should have already received a Kindergarten school supply list.  If not, the list can be located in Target or on the Bristow Run website (www.pwcs.edu/BristowRun).  Please place all school supplies in a labeled shopping bag.  You do not need to label individual supplies, just your child’s backpack, lunch box and coat.  School supplies can be dropped off at Kindergarten Orientation.  If any supplies is missing, a note will be sent home with a checklist as to what was missing.  I want to thank you for investing in your child’s education.  The school supplies are very much needed in a Kindergarten classroom!

Encore:

We will be on a 7 day rotation for ENCORE this year.  On PE days please send your child to school in sneakers.

Day 1-  PE

Day 2- Music

Day 3- Science Lab

Day 4- Art

Day 5- PE

Day 6- Math Lab/Computer Lab

Day 7- Library

Allergies/Medication:

Please let me know if your child has any allergies or takes medicine on a daily basis. This includes asthma.

Dress Code:

I recommend that you send your child to school in clothes and shoes that are “kindergarten friendly”.  Active learning is promoted by seeing, feeling, tasting and smelling.  Becoming involved may mean getting messy.  Please label clothing items such as coats and sweatshirts.  Please keep an extra pair of clothes in your child’s backpack.

Transportation:

A note is required on any occasion that your child has ANY transportation changes; including getting off the bus at another stop or being picked up at school if he/she usually rides the bus.  Without a note, we are obligated to follow the regular routine.   If something comes up during the day, of you forgot to send a note, please call the school as early as possible and the secretaries will make sure we get the message.

Panther Folder:

Your child will be bringing home a Panther Folder everyday.  This folder will be an important tool for communication.  On the left side of the folder will be your child’s reading log.  This stays in the folder.  Everything on the right side should be cleaned out each night.  The right side will contain notes from school, completed work and notices.  If you would like to send in any notes, such as dismissal notes or illness excuses, please send them in this folder.  It will be checked every morning.

Homework Folder:

The homework folder is the blue folder you purchased as a part of the school supplies.  It will be sent home on Mondays and needs to come back each Friday with completed homework.   Your child’s nightly reading is a part of their homework grade.  Each student in Kindergarten is required to read/be read to for 15 minutes each night.  You are to initial the reading calendar (located on the left hand side of the Homework Folder) each night to document the completed reading.  We all get busy sometimes, and if you skip one night, you can make up for it the next by reading for 30 minutes!  The reading log is checked weekly.

Show and Tell:

One child per day will be asked to share an item of interest with us during our show and tell time.  We will send a note home the day before their turn which elaborates more on how we do show and tell.  Please help your child prepare by discussing the item and deciding on three clues that help the class guess what is hiding in their backpack!  We ask that you not send in items that are fragile.

Parent Volunteers/Room Mother:

We strongly encourage parents to volunteer in the classroom.  I prefer to avoid parent volunteers the first few weeks of school because children are getting acquainted with their new environment.  Please do not feel shy about coming into help.  I will be notifying you once we start having volunteers in the classroom and you can come and sign up on our calendar.

Progress Reports:

Report cards will be sent home at the end of each nine-week grading period.  At the mid-point of these periods, an interim report will be sent.  I will be conferencing with all parents in November.  However, any time you have a question or concern feel free to send a note, email (garveyee@pwcs.edu) or call me at (703) 753-7741.  I am busy with the children during school hours, but will get back to you as soon as possible.
