Frequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
What if my child forgets to turn in their homework or take home folder?
First grade is a learning experience. We're teaching the process of completing an assignment at home and bringing it back to school. You don't have to go home & come back to school to deliver it. Please just return it the next day. If your child forgot their take home folder, I'll use another folder as a back up until he/she brings the "panther" folder back.Back to Top
How much reading should I do with my child each night?
20-30 minutes is required each night. You can read to your child, with your child or have your child read to you. You can read the books they are working on in reading group or a book of their choice. Please sign their night reading log. Simply read, read, read! :)Back to Top
How do I get in touch with the teacher?
You may call me any time before 8:45 a.m. or after 3:35 p.m. at the school (703-753-7741). Anytime in between then, I am in class. Please remember that I am teaching and can't have a conference with you then. You can reach me anytime by e-mail (kanterjx@pwcs.edu). This is the fastest and most direct way to contact me!Back to Top
Can my child bring in birthday treats on their birthday?
Yes. Please note that we have 23 students in our class this year. If possible, please let me know at least a day in advance so I can plan our day to include the extra time. You may also bring them at lunch time to be passed out in the cafeteria. Our lunch time is 1:05-1:35.Back to Top
Because we eat lunch at 1:05, I am asking that you send in a healthy snack for your child. I ask that it is a "working snack", one that your child can eat while we continue our tasks and doesn't require utensils. Please make sure the snack isn't a sugary or overly salty snack. Great snacks are baby carrots, crackers, granola bars, etc. The students are welcome to bring in water bottles, but no juice is allowed in the classroom.Back to Top
Can I come and eat lunch with my child?
Absolutely! Please remember to bring a valid photo i.d. (ex. driver's license) and to sign in at the welcome table. You can meet us in the cafeteria around 1:05 p.m. Lunch for students cost $2.00. Adult lunches are $3.00.Back to Top
When can my child check a book out at the school's library?
Your child can return their books on their designated library day and check out new ones. Also, I can send students down to the library two at a time each day to check new books out, provided they return the ones they checked out. I will ask each morning who needs to get a new book so they don't have to wait one week to get a new book.Back to Top
What if I need to change my child's way of getting home today?
Please call the office at 703-753-7741 who will then notify me or send me a note in the morning. Please don't e-mail this information. If I happen to be absent that day, my substitute won't have access to my e-mail.Back to Top
