1. 5th grade mathematics standards emphasize developing proficiency in using
whole numbers, fractions and decimals to solve problems. Students also learn
the metric system and how to convert from standard measurements to metric.
2. Science standards for 5th graders are quite extensive. These standards
emphasize the importance of selecting appropriate instruments for measuring
and recording observations. Students are introduced to more detailed concepts
of sound and light; properties of matter and the cellular make up or
organisms; the 5 kingdoms of living things, characteristics of the ocean and
the Earth's changing surface. There is also a great focus on student growth
in understanding the nature of science and the scientific method.
3. Reading and writing skills in Grade 5 continue to support an increased
emphasis on content area learning and utilizing resources of the media center.
Students read texts in all subjects and will continue to develop an
appreciation for literature by reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction.
