In 1606, some 105 adventurers set off from England to try and establish the
first permanent English colony in the New World. They settled in what is now
the state of Virginia and called their colony first James Fort, and then
James Towne, in honor of James I, the King of England. The early years of
the colony were nearly a total disaster. Almost half of the settlers died
due to poor choices in settlement location, management of resources, and
quarrels with the indigenous Powhatan Indians

takes to be a good citizen. A child's view of the world expands in the third
grade, with big doses of history, geography, economics, and civics. Prompt
fourth-graders to ask questions about history, get comfortable working with
maps, and examine and analyze economic concepts. In fifth grade, your child
needs to demonstrate more sophistication before the subject area becomes

We made a timeline of important events from 1860 to 1865. Our bar graphs
contain data about the North and the South in 1861 when the Civil War began.
Each graph compares the resources of the two regions. We looked at Civil War
battle victories, used our mapping skills to examine the nation in detail,
and made both Confederate and Union flags. We have drawings of Civil War
uniforms, short biographies of Civil War leaders, images of other leaders,
links to other Civil War Sites, and activity sheets for you to do. We hope
you enjoy our work!

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ONLINE PRESENTS:
      THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD INTERACTIVE ACTIVITY
You are a slave.
Your body, your time, your very breath belong to a farmer in 1850s Maryland.
Six long days a week you tend his fields and make him rich. You have never
tasted freedom. You never expect to.

And yet . . . your soul lights up when you hear whispers of attempted escape.
Freedom means a hard, dangerous trek. Do you try it?
