Choose a government worker in your community. You might choose the mayor, city manager, a council member, police chief, building inspector, city clerk, or city engineer. The worker that you choose must work at the city level, not the state level. This project will involve several steps and will require that several pieces of information be turned in. This project will involve three separate test grades. PLEASE FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES CAREFULLY. Use the “help” sheets provided to assist you with each step of the project. 1. Type or write to a community worker. Tell who you are and why you are writing. Ask the government worker to describe his/her job. You may want to invite him/her to speak at our school. Tell your worker you need a reply no later than April 20, so that you will have time to write a one-page report about that job. It is your responsibility to make sure you get an answer so that you can complete this assignment. Have your parents call the worker’s office if you have not received an answer by April 13. Be sure you use the correct letter format. (See attached). Bring the first copy of your letter to school by Wednesday, March 21. I will grade and edit your letter and then give it back to you. If necessary, you will recopy your letter, making any needed corrections. After I have approved your final copy, you may then mail your letter. You should get the letter into the mail quickly, to ensure a timely response. You may write very neatly or use the computer to type your letter, but you, not your parents, should do the typing. Due Date 1: First copy due by : Wednesday, March 21. You will receive a grade on this copy of your letter. Make sure you do a neat and thorough job. Corrected copy of your letter due Friday, March 23 *if necessary. (I will get it back to you quickly, so you can get it in the mail.) 2. Predict what kind of work you think he/she does. Type or write a good paragraph (using our 5 paragraph format) about this prediction and include at least 5 things that you think your worker does at his/her job. Make two copies of your prediction paragraph, one to turn in on March 30 (which I will keep), and one to turn in with your final report. You will receive a grade on this paragraph. Due Date 2: Turn in your neatly written or typed paragraph on Friday, March 30. 3. Once you receive your reply from your worker, you will write a one-page hand-written (in cursive) report about what you have learned about the government worker you have chosen. Focus on his/her job duties. Compare what you thought he/she did to what you learned that the actual job duties are. Do not copy straight from the letter you receive. Put those responsibilities in your own words as much as possible. **Final Due Date: Turn in your one-page report, your copy of your prediction paragraph, and the letter you received from your community worker on Friday, April 27, 2012. ***************************************************************************** Homework Offenses will begin the week of Sept. 26!!!! Remind your student to do ALL of the assigned homework and to turn it in ON TIME! ****************************************************************************** Reminder: As a school, we are trying to "Go Green" so we will no longer be printing and sending home monthly lunch menus...you can access the lunch menu online through my webpage or going to the school web page. ******************************************************************************
