The Hero Cycle
A hero is one type of archetype in literature.
Archetype comes from the Greek and means an original model or prototype.
In literature an archetype is a character, an event, a story, or an image that
recurs in different works, in different cultures, and in different times.
Images, themes, symbols, ideas, characters, and situations can all be
archetypes.

Connection to literary criticism:
Joseph Campbell, a professor of mythology at Sarah
Lawrence College and author, defined the "hero cycle" in his 1949 book The
Hero with a Thousand Faces. He used the works of psychiatrist Carl Jung to
argue that all heroes, both ancient and modern, follow the same cycle. To look
at a story in a Campbellian way is to apply his hero cycle to the story.
