About the Counselors
  

Anne Henry received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology and Education (dual concentration) from the College of William and Mary. She received her Master of Education degree in Counseling and Development from George Mason University. She has been working as a school counselor at Alvey Elementary for 10 years. Before becoming a school counselor, she worked as a classroom teacher for 5 years. Her counseling center is located in Room 122, otherwise known as Ms. Henry's Tropical Retreat.  


 

Sara Neff earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, PA. She graduated in May 2012 with her Master of Education degree in School Counseling from James Madison University. She will be at Alvey on all school days, except Thursday, where she will be at Ellis Elementary. Her office is located in Room 157, otherwise known as Mrs. Neff's Counseling Cove.  


Counseling Program Vision


At J.W. Alvey Elementary School, all students work to learn to their fullest potential, achieve their goals, and succeed in life. All students will participate in comprehensive classroom guidance lessons, and will have access to focused small group and individual counseling, which will allow them to achieve academically, grow personally, develop socially, and build career readiness. Graduates of Alvey Elementary will become successful life-long learners, as well as productive citizens in the community.

Mission of the Department


The J.W. Alvey Elementary School Counseling Program strives to engage the diverse community of learners (students, parents, teachers) in equitable, proactive solutions that enable all students to access resources and achieve individualized personal/social, career, and academic goals necessary to become successful, productive citizens throughout life.

Beliefs and Philosophy Statement  


The professional school counselors serving J.W. Alvey School believe:

 

  • All students can achieve and deserve equitable access to resources and a rigorous curriculum.

  • The dignity, culture, and social/emotional needs of every student is to be respected and valued.

  • The school counselors will use data to continuously improve the school counseling program and to deliver services.

  • The school counselors will plan and manage a comprehensive counseling program.

  • The school counselors will advocate for the entire community of learners.

  • The school counselors will collaborate with families, staff, and community resources to address student developmental needs, primary prevention, and continuous student achievement.

  • The Alvey Counseling Advisory Committee (school counselors in collaboration with staff, families, and students) will annually audit and evaluate the counseling program (using the ASCA Program Audit), in order to provide quality service.

  • The school counselors will abide by ASCA’s professional school counseling standards and ethics.
