SRO Auditions 2007

Charlottesville High School

Registration from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Auditions start at 9:45 a.m.

You must let Ms. A know by Tuesday Sept. 7th whether or not you will be auditioning.

Info:

 

Ø     This is for grades 10, 11, & 12; 9th graders are also eligible, but it is very difficult for 9th graders to get in!!

Ø     Auditions will be held at Charlottesville High School.

Ø     Honors – required to audition; Chamber Orchestra members-- you are strongly encouraged to audition; all--only those who audition are eligible for an A+.

Requirements:

 

I. Scales: 3 octaves, Major & minor

Quarter note = mm.120 [this means play twice as fast as the second hand]

 

acending:                     2 notes slurred, two notes martele (separate/somewhat accented/hammered)

descending:                  4 notes slurred

 

violin scales: 3 octaves

MAJOR: G, A, Bb, B, C

MINOR: g, a, b, c (no Bb minor)

 

viola /cello scales: 3 octaves

MAJOR: C, D, Eb, E, F

MINOR: c, d, e, f (no Eb minor)

  

bass  scales: 2 octaves

MAJOR: E, F, G, A

MINOR: e, f, g, a

 

 

 

II. Orchestral excerpts:

These were handed out in the Fall of 2006. Ms. Almore will hand them out again on the first day of school.

IV. Sight-reading--you can practice this! 

Take out old orchestra music and play it. 

You don't even have to be with other string players to practice sight-reading.  

If you have a friend in band or chorus or guitar, ask to look at their music and clap the rhythms with them!

 

Violins and Cellos (and Basses) can use piano music to practice sight reading!!  

Violas can, too, since you need to learn the treble clef to be competitive for SRO!
