     Virginia's Native Americans
 The children should be familar with the following for their upcoming test:
   *the three languages spoken by Virginia's Indian tribes and where each 
language group is located
   *that all Virginian Indians are part of the larger group called the 
Eastern Woodland Indians
   *the Powhatans and Chespeake were 2 important Algonquian
   *the Siouan lived mostly in the Piedmont
   *the Cherokee spoke Iroquoian and lived in western Virginia
   *the Nottoway also spoke Iroquoian, but lived in southern Virginia around 
the fall line
   *that the group the settlers first came in contact with were members of 
the Powhatan Confederation and that they spoke Algonquian
   *the leader (Powhatan) of the group was a powerful chief (weroance) 
called by the English Powhatan. His actual name was Wahunsunacock.He was the 
father of Pocahontas.
   *Powhatan inherited his right to be chief through his mother--not his 
father as with the English rulers
   *the Powhatans fished, hunted, and gathered food to survive
   *the most important animal for their survival was the deer
   *their most important crop was corn
   *they lived in longhouses and wigwams which they called yahekins 
   *the indians of this region wore little clothing.
   *They used bear grease and berries as a sun screen and to keep warm
   *their only metal was copper which they used for jewelry
   *tools were made of bone, stone, shells, and wood
   *rivers were their main way of traveling ( They made dugout canoes of all 
sizes to do this)
   *in all aspects of their lives the Powhatans made use of the natural 
environment around them (They believed to use more than one needed was 
wrong.)
   *the Spanish tried to start a colony in Virginia before Jamestown. They 
built a mission. However, they left after many were killed by the Powhatans.
For this reason the Indians feared they would return.
   *some common Algonquian words include Chesapeake, moccasin, succotash, 
racoon, oppossum
