Kindergarten whole group sessions have touched on a variety of skills that
these children are learning everyday. We have covered Thinking Stories such
as: The Tooth Fairy Disaster whose objectives are to promote
imagination, follow directions, see relationships and apply information; The
King and His Towers designed to develop problem-solving skills, flexibility
of thought and making predictions; Games Bunnies Play designed to teach
deductive reasoning and following directions. The lessons are mostly
literature based and contain a math, language arts, or science subject focus.
Recently, to focus on the math strand more in-depth, we read, Oh the Thinks
You Can Think as we applied the skill of sorting. Children were introduced
to Math Exemplar Problems that coincided with spring. The Math Exemplars
allow students to solve a math problem using drawings or charts to come up
with a solution which they must communicate to the teacher. Children find
multiple paths to the solution and so begins important steps in problem-
solving.
