| The third grade began the year learning about the theme of Structure.
The classes were given blocks to construct. On the blocks were elements of
the civilizations they had studied in second grade. The third graders were
placed in groups to see if they could construct a structure that would
correctly illustrate a civilization's characteristics.
In science, students explored the subject of matter using Roto-copters
and ice cube jackets. In each lab, students were asked to see the
relationship between matter and mass.
The Language Arts flex groups have read two very different stories. The
first was a Junior Great Book selection entitled, The Fisherman and his Wife
by the Brothers Grimm. The second selection was a non-fiction book about
Hurricane Hunters. This book proved to be timely since the students were
studying the effects of a hurricane during the hurricane season!
The third grade math flex group has been exploring the aspects of the
Papy Mini-computer. They have also been engaged in working on Math Exemplars
that correlate with the Virginia Beach curriculum. In the second nine weeks,
we will be working with String Games and more Math Exemplars and Groundwork
selections.
