Novels: We will begin the year with a whole group novel study. The
students will be applying critical thinking skills within the classroom as
we move through the novel. Students will also be learning a strategy during
this study that they will carry over into novel groups for the near future.
Grammar: Generally we will have short grammar lessons and students will
have morning work to practice skills. Grammar skills are also worked on in
their independent writing journals.
Writing: Students have a creative writing journal. I work independently
with each child on correcting grammar, structure, and word choice. Each
child is at a different level and this helps me attack the needs of each
student. Each child will have a writing portfolio that will be kept in the
classroom. We will keep assignments in the portfolio all year so that they
can see their progress at the end of the year.
Writing: Students will have a writing assignment on an assigned topic every
7-10 days. The students will continue building on their skills with each
essay. These writing assignments will be kept seperate from the writing
journal.
Wordly Wise: Wordly Wise will begin the second week of school. We will
cover a unit every two weeks. We will complete the first unit in the
classroom. After the unit one quiz the books should be kept at home. All
Wordly Wise assignments will be completed at home from unit 2 on.
