It's Academic!

LANGUAGE ARTS- Virginia Beach is currently using the Scott-Foresman reading series. It is a
whole language and phonetic approach to reading. I will instruct in a whole group setting as well as small groups.
Students will be grouped according to their reading ability. These groups will be flexible.
I will be supplementing Scott-Foresman with another reading program called "Making Meaning".
The children will also be reading silently for 30 minutes each day and responding to the literature. We have begun with 15 minutes. They have done extremely well this week. They are becoming better and better at selecting books at their appropriate reading level.
In Unit 2 we will be studying...
comparing and contrasting
steps in a process
graphic sources
sequence
fact/opinion
common and proper nouns
the "writing process"

-MATH- We are using the "Everyday Math Series" from the University of Chicago. It is a spiral
based learning and touches on the various strands in mathematics over and over. The students use
lots if manipulatives and games. I am excited about this program and feel that the children come
away with a deep understanding of numbers.
Unit 3

tally marks
time
equivalent names for numbers
frames and arrows/ number patterns

SOCIAL STUDIES- We have learned that...
George Washington was the first President of the United States. He helped us fight for our freedom from England during the Revolutionary War.
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President. He kept the country united during the Civil War. He was willing to fight against slavery.
Helen Keller was a blind and deaf child who went on to accomplish wonderful things. She went to college and became an author and speaker.
Jackie Robinson was the first African American to play baseball ion the major leagues. He broke many barriers and helped promote racial equality.
Susan B. Anthony was a suffragist. She fought for the right for women to vote.
