It's Academic!

LANGUAGE ARTS- Virginia Beach is currently using the Scott-Foresman reading series. It is a
whole language and phonetic approach to reading. I will instruct in a whole group setting as well as small groups. 
Students will be grouped according to their reading ability. These groups will be flexible.
I will be supplementing Scott-Foresman with another reading program called "Making Meaning".
The children will also be reading silently for 30 minutes each day and responding to the literature. They improving in their ability to select books at their appropriate reading level.

MATH- We are using the "Everyday Math Series" from the University of Chicago. It is a spiral
based learning and touches on the various strands in mathematics over and over. The students use
lots if manipulatives and games. I am excited about this program and feel that the children come
away with a deep understanding of numbers.

SCIENCE- Our current unit of study is Weather. The concepts that we will become familiar with are...
-processes of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation as it relates to the water cycle
-weather in terms of temperature, wind, and precipitation
-seasonal weather patterns and local variations
-record and describe daily weather conditions such as sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy, or snowy
-severe weather patterns (hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, and thunderstorms
-compare and contrast droughts and floods
-types of clouds (stratus, cumulus, cirrus)
-weather instruments including thermometer, rain gage, and weather vain
