How can I help my child be prepared for school?

You should be helping your child with his or her homework every night at
home. I understand that we all have busy lives, but please try to make an
effort to go over the nightly homework and to ask your child about his or
her day.

When is graded work sent home?

Work is sent home on Fridays in Friday folders. Go over the work, sign the
folder, and return it on Monday.

My child received a low grade on an assignment. Should I be worried?

It depends. If it is one of two papers, I would go over the work, and ask
if there were any problems. One or two papers over an entire marking period
isn't much to be concerned about. Occasionaly, your child may have an "off
day" and not do his or her best. However, if it is happeneing a lot, then I
would be concerned. Please call and schedule a conference so that we can
talk about how to help your child!

What are the SOLs?

The SOLs stands for Standards of Learning. They are what the Department of Education of Virginia
expects us to teach to your children. In late May and early June, we have a series of tests based on
these standards. Third graders take one in Reading, Math, Science and Social Studies. They are on
all of the objectives that they have learned since Kindergarten! They are a big deal, but with your
help we can all do our best on these tests!

How can I contact you?

You can either email me at fischeae@pwcs.edu and I will get back to you as soon as I can, or you can
call me at Kerrydale at 703-590-1262. I can talk before or after school, but be aware that I often do
not stay past 4:30 so that I can pick up my new baby from the babysitter! You can also send me a
note in English or Spanish.
