 KOOL-AID MOLARITY LAB

1.     Using your assigned mass of Kool-Aid, work with your partner to calculate the molarity (M) of the 500 mL sucrose (C12H22O11) solution that you will make. Show all steps in both data books and check with teacher.

2.     Get two new plastic cups and one 500 mL bottle of spring water.

3.     Use one cup to weigh out your mass of Kool-Aid. Save the cup.

4.     Use permanent marker to mark the 500 mL level on your bottle.

5.     Pour some of the water out into your second cup to make room in the bottle for the Kool-Aid.

6.     Add grams of Kool-Aid to the bottle and mix.  When dissolved, add water UP TO THE 500 mL LINE ONLY.

7.     Label your bottle with the molarity (M) on the lid, and your names on the side.

8.     Arrange the bottle in order of increasing concentration on the demo desk at the front of the room.

9.     Read the directions on the Kool-Aid container. Determine the molarity of sucrose in Kool-Aid made according to the directions.

10.            Taste the different Kool-Aid solutions. Determine which molarity tastes the best. How does your favorite sucrose concentration compare to the manufacturer’s recommended sucrose concentration.
