After-School Ballet Class
Below is the information from the 2012-2013 After-School Ballet program.
I want to make sure my students have the materials they need to succeed.
So I've created a classroom project request to provide field trip tickets for the After-School ballet at
an award-winning charity.
I'm asking for donations of any size (yes, even one dollar helps!) to help my kids.
For the next week, any donation you make to my project will be doubled!
If you know anyone who is passionate about education, please pass this along.
Your donation will brighten my students' school year, and you'll get photos and thank yous from our class.
Here's my classroom request:
The Magic of The Nutcracker!
To have your donation matched dollar for dollar, enter the match code INSPIRE
on the payment screen. This awesome match offer lasts through August 19, 2013.
My students and I greatly appreciate your support.
This school year, 2013-14, we hope to be able to expand the after-school ballet program to three grade level classes, grades 3-5.
As of this writing, July 24, we have not finalized the days of the week for the program this year, but believe that it will be on Mondays and/or Wednesdays again, in order to maximize the number of classes we can offer.
The applications will be coming with the SHIP clubs information at the beginning of school.
If your child is interested in participating, please be sure to return the completed application as soon as possible.
SHIP gives us a deadline and any applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
Every year, we have more applications for the ballet program than we have spaces.
We hope to expand to 36 spaces this year, with dedicated classes for third, fourth and fifth grade students, with 12 students in each class. We found last year that having larger class sizes made it more difficult for the children to have enough space to dance, and made it more difficult for the teachers to give the children the individual attention they need.
I will be posting a DonorsChoose project in August, to provide tickets for our annual Nutcracker field trip.
Starting September 23, SONIC and DonorsChoose will once again provide the Limeades for Learning promotion. Last year, we received funding for the Nutcracker field trip from Limeades for Learning. The way the promotion works is that you can vote for your favorite project every day, starting September 23, and every week, the projects with the most votes are funded. In previous years, we have had parents obtain rolls of stickers from SONIC. Each sticker counts for 2 votes and can be entered online. More information about this will be available at the Open House and Back to School night.

So far, our sponsors for this school year are Junior Woman's Club of Williamsburg, Virginia Commission for the Arts, Martins, and Kiwanis of Toano, in addition to SHIP. We should hear about the Target grant by late August. If you know someone who is associated with one of these organizations, please express your gratitude for their support. This is a beautiful opportunity for our students to experience the art of ballet, something which is unique to Matthew Whaley, thanks to these sponsors.
After-School Ballet Class 2012-2013:
This is a totally grant-funded program for children in grades 3-5 at Matthew Whaley.
The program is in partnership with SHIP, so be on the lookout for SHIP club applications in early September and turn in your application as soon as possible---don't miss the deadline!!!
Thirty-one children were selected by lottery for the program, which runs from October through the end of April.
The ballet class meets from 4-5:00 p.m. on Monday afternoons.
There are two classes with 15-16 children in each class.
Teachers are professional dance instructors.
A healthy snack and bus transportation home after each class is provided by SHIP.
We will be taking a field trip to see The Nutcracker at William and Mary in December.
Tickets are paid for by our grant sponsors.
Every child will be given a uniform, consisting of a leotard/tights/ballet slippers, to wear for class each week.
Also, in January, there will be an optional ten week technique class that will meet on Wednesdays from 4-5:00 p.m.
On May 1, the children will participate in a spring recital.
Each child will perform both a ballet and a jazz dance.
Costumes are provided for the recital.
One child who shows exceptional potential as a dancer will be awarded a ballet scholarship valued at $1000 for a year's worth of twice weekly ballet classes at Virginia Regional Ballet.
Mrs. Millie Pegram, one of our MW first grade teachers, and I will be sponsoring the after-school ballet program again this year.
We can hardly wait to get started!!!
Our grant sponsors this year are:
Junior Woman's Club of Williamsburg;
Virginia Commission for the Arts;
Williamsburg Community Foundation. If you know someone who is affiliated with one of these organizations, please express your gratitude for their support----the program would not exist without them!
