O.R.E.O. Project

"That's the Way the Cookie Tumbles..."

On Monday, October 2nd,the All-Stars team took part in an O.R.E.O. (Our Really Exciting Online Project) Day. We were one of 556 registered classrooms/schools from 46 States plus....Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Puerto Rico, Scotland, and Thailand who participated.

All team subjects had lessons that had "Oreos" as a theme.

  • Students stacked the original Oreo cookie and counted how many Oreos they could stack before the Oreos tumble!

  • All math classes conducted the experiment in class. They compiled the results to find the class average, as well as look for other measures of central tendency. Students decided which type of display would be best to compare the results of the three classes. They also looked at data from the other participating schools and compared results. (SOL 6.18, 6.19)

  • All science classes applied the scientific method to what they did in math by writing up a report, and identifying each part of the process. (SOL 6.1)

  • In history, students located the participating countries using an atlas. Then, they located them on a world map using the latitude and longitude coordinates. (SOL USI.1)

  • Language Arts had several choices as students could:
    • read an article about the history of the Oreo cookie and answer questions.
    • play an adjective memory game - using adjectives to describe an Oreo cookie.
    • use their creative writing skills to tell how the Oreo cookie got its name.
    • use OREO cookies to connect with how they personally feel about specific issues rather than summarizing and/or regurgitating what was written.

Our O.R.E.O. day was a huge success.

Final Results!!! Classes Posting Results ~ 351 Number of Participants ~ 8,494 Average Stack Count ~ 18 cookies 8,494 participants x average of 18 cookies each = Drumroll, please. about 152,892 cookies Since each student had two attempts - there were about 305,784 cookies stacked around the world for this project!!!
