Why does my school have a counselor?

The counselor is here to help boys and girls feel good about themselves so 
that they can be happy and do their best in school. The counselor wants all 
boys and girls to be able to learn and to keep on learning!

How will the counselor work with me?

The counselor will work with me individually, in small groups, and in the 
classroom! The counselor will also work with Mom and Dad and my teacher so 
that I can do my best in school.

What will my counselor do?

My counselor will always listen to me when I feel worried, afraid, or mixed 
up. when i feel happy, proud, or want to share something special. Or when i 
feel lonely, sad, or angry. My counselor will talk to me about what i want 
to be when i grow up, or when i need a friend.

How do I get to see the counselor?

1. I can ask the counselor to meet with me.
2. Mom and Dad can ask the counselor to talk with me.
3. My teacher or principal can ask that i visit the counselor.
4. The counselor can invite me in for a talk.

What if I feel nervous about my SOL tests, or any other tests?

You can look at the part that talks about the SOL tests, or you can talk to 
the counselor and she will meet with you by yourself or in a group to help 
you learn how to relax.

How do I get to be in a group?

When there are groups, your counselor will email your teacher and your 
teacher will recommend you for a group.  Your parents may also call and 
recommend you for a group. Your counselor also can invite you into a group, 
or you can ask to be part of a group.

What kinds of groups do you have?

We have groups for separated families, parents in jail, bereavement groups, 
test-taking skills, study skills, organizational skills, impulse control, 
anger management, social skills, etc.  If you don't see a group mentioned 
that you would like to join, you can suggest a group.
