10/23/09 Second and Third Blocks
HW Update. 
No Vocabulary list! Based on most recent quiz results, we need to focus on reading the text. Therefore, read and outline chapter 4. For next class, sections one and two MUST be outlined, and we will seek out the vocabulary together. 
 
 
 
 
10/15:  Read the Slave Narrative found under HUSH Links and answer the following questions, in writing, on a piece of paper, to be turned into me, Monday.  (2nd Block)

1.  What European influence does Equiano describe during his Middle Passage journey?

2.  What does Equiano mean when he refers to the slavers as “nominal Christians?”

 O, ye nominal Christians! might not an African ask you -- Learned you this from your God, who says unto you, Do unto all men as you would men should do unto you?
 
3.  What evidence of magic does Equiano see?

4.  How does  Equiano's life as an African slave differ from the image you have of slavery in America?

Both 2nd and 3rd Block:  Jeopardy Questions on Chapter 3 next class.  Individual answers.

10/07:  2nd Block Assignment:

 

            1.  Correct the quiz by writing out the question and answer and identify the page of the text where you found the answer.  If I have your quiz, this is due 2 classes from now.
            2. Read Chapter 3.  Do vocab and focus questions uploaded on HUSH documents. Due Tuesday.  You should have a much better understanding of how to do the vocabuary and reading of the text after your open note quiz. 
            3.  Blog on the Block 2 Blog on my homepage! Blog assignment is due Tuesday.

10/06:  Chapter 3 powerpoints are uploaded - there are 2 - one is a ppt from the book company - tell me how you like it.

Write an Editorial critique about Howard Zinn and his article on Columbus.  You can find the article under HUSH Links, and also I have uploaded a Word Document.

3.  LOOKING AHEAD:
We will review and discuss the Zinn article.  Then, we will review and discuss an opposing view.  Next, Chapter 2 of the textbook is to be read with the terms and focus questions found under HUSH DOCUMENTS as a guide.  (Remember, the first quiz will be open book from notes only - so gauge your time accordingly) and the reading will be discussed and reviewed with Powerpoint and other teaching aids.

10/02/09:
2nd Block - The powerpoints for class are uploaded under HUSH documents.  Next class Monday we will complete vocab, focus questions, and chapter 2.  Quiz on Chapter 2 Wednesday.  Your next assignment is the same as Block 3's below, minus the Blog, for those who wish to work ahead.
 
3rd Block: 
1.  Read Chapter 3.  Do vocab and focus questions uploaded on HUSH documents. We will probably only get to the first 2 sections of Chapter 3 on Tuesday, so only do the Focus questions/vocab that apply to those sections.  I will post a powerpoint later this weekend for Tuesday's class!

10/01/09:

I have uploaded the Chesapeake colonization ppt under HUSH Documents.  Also, I have revised the vocab sheet by marking out the vocab that is not on the quiz, but will appear on a later quiz/test.  It is uploaded under HUSH Documents, the words not on quiz are stricken through.

Complete your reading of Chapter 2, review the vocabulary for an informed discussion (question and answer) and answer, in writing, the Focus Questions.  The assignment is posted under HUSH Documents, in the event you cannot open the document the focus questions are as follows:
 
 
  1. Discuss three effects of the Colombian exchange on both the natives of the “new world” and the Europeans who “discovered” them.

 

  1. In what ways did the English colonies develop differently from the Spanish and French colonies?

 

  1. Explain the motives for those who founded the Jamestown colony and those who founded the Plymouth colony. In what ways were their motives similar? In what ways were they different?

 

  1. Discuss the reasons for the rise of permanent slavery in the English colonies during the 17th and 18th centuries.

 

5. Explain how religion motives affected the development of two of the following colonies: 

a) Massachusetts          b) Maryland                 c) Rhode Island            d) Pennsylvania

2.  1st 9 weeks test review is uploaded under HUSH documents.  This is an open book, open note test.  It is due the day of your 1st 9 Weeks test - either November 9 or 10.

               A.  Where, in colonial days, did Virginia have its own Tea Party?
                 B.  What does Mr. Feeney of the tv show Boy Meets World have to do with the unit we are currently studying?
