Weekly Parent Newsletter

Reading:   We will be reading a Junior Great Book story this week.  Students will be finishing their Independent Literature Project.  The format is similar to how they completed The 100 Penny Box, but they are reading a longer chapter book, Dear Mr. Henshaw.  I read aloud the first two segments to get them started, but from here on out, they are reading the book independently.  Plenty of classtime is provided for them to complete the reflection questions at school. There will also be a comprehension quiz when finished.  We had initially anticipated not completing this project until June 6th, but we were able to move along quicker than expected.  Therefore, the project will be due by this Friday June 1.  There will be no more Vocabulary Workshop units this year.

Writing:   There will be no more word study lists this year.  Students are finishing the 4th Quarter writing prompt this week.  They are being required to write a personal expository.  This will be the initial writing that their 4th grade teacher will see to determine their writing ability at the beginning of next school year.

Math:   We will continue with timed fact drills and Hands-On Equations this week.  You will find some practice word problems that the students are now solving using algebra.  At this point they are not using the manipulatives anymore and are drawing the representations to solve.  This is a very guided activity at this point, but we are working towards independence.  I also introducing the students to Sudoku.  Critical thinking and problem solving are key mathmatical skills when working with numbers. I will also be introducing decimals, this is a 4th grade objective.

Social Studies & Science: We are continuing our Review Unit this week to prepare for the science SOLs.  Please continue to make every effort to follow the review schedule in the booklet.  Remember to sign that you have helped your child to study.   The science SOL is Wednesday!
