* There will be a meeting at the end of 4th block for anyone interested in 
participating in the Monument Avenue 10K on March 27th. Listen for the 
announcement.

* DonÕt forget to bring your spare change for our Change for Haiti jars. You 
will find jars in classrooms and in the cafeteria where you pay for your 
lunch. Consider putting your spare change from lunch in the jar just one day 
out of the week instead of getting yourself a snack. Every gift counts!

* Congratulations Cougars! You have donated over $250.00 to make a differnce 
in the lives of millions of Haitians in only 2 days!!!! Way to go! Watch your 
progress on the poster in the cafeteria.

* Initial payment for senior trip has been postponed. It is not due this week.

* Any student interested in joining the Art Club please sign up at Room 511.

* Any students with winter pictures and would not mind being in the yearbook, 
please give pictures to Keondra Johnson, Marissa Smith or to Mrs. P. Johnson 
in room 308.

* Tenth Grade students who are applying for Governor's School shold sign up 
for shadowing on February 5th. The sign up sheet is located in Mrs. 
Robertson's office in the Guidance Department.

* Any student interested in auditioning for the musical "Willy Wonka" should 
see Mrs. Hite.

* Students who are staying for tutoring on Tues. and Thurs. need to meet in 
room 201. You must be in room 201 by 3:15.

* All students who come to the store after 8:13 must have a note from their 
teacher.


Scholarships


* 10th, 11th, 12th grade students: Don't forget tonight we will have a 
financial aid information workshop at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. Please plan 
to attend.

* Any Seniors applying to VA Tech and applying for the Pamplin Leader Award 
Scholarship, please turn in application to your guidance counselor by 
Thursday, Jan. 28th.

* SENIORS- SCHOLARSHIP: The Old Dominion Chapter, International Association 
of Administrative Professionals is offering its annual scholarship award to 
students in administrative support technology curriculum or candidates 
interested in continuing their education and pursuing certification. Visit 
your Guidance Counselor for details. DEADLINE: MARCH 31, 2010.

* Juniors: The 2010 Rural Electric Washington Youth Tour Contest is now open 
to all JUNIORS. Contest winners will travel to Washington, D.C. for the 
event, which will take place from June 13-17, 2010. Students interested in 
competing should pick up an application in the Guidance office or from their 
U. S. History teacher. DEADLINE: FRIDAY, MARCH 19, 2010.

* 9th-12th Grade SCHOLARSHIP: A $1,000 Scholarship for Virginia high school 
students, grades 9-12 is being offered by the American Education Center. 
Students interested in participating in the essay competition should visit 
the Guidance office or see their History teacher for details. DEADLINE: APRIL 
1, 2010.

* 10th -11th Grade SUMMER PROGRAMS: The Center for the Enhancement of 
Engineering Diversity (CEED) at Virginia Tech is sponsoring Computers and 
Technology at VA Tech (C-Tech2) from June 27-July 10, 2010. The primary focus 
of this two-week program is to develop and sustain the interests of 
participants in engineering and the sciences. Sophomores and Juniors 
interested in applying should visit the Guidance office for details or visit

* 2010 GRADUATES (SENIORS) SCHOLARSHIP: The Virginia Credit Union will award 
scholarships for an amount up to $2,500 to 25 students enrolled in an 
accredited college or university for the 2010-2011 academic year. Applicants 
must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better to be considered. Visit the 
Guidance office for details. DEADLINE: MARCH 31, 2010.

* SENIORS: The Colonial Agricultural Education Foundation will offer over 90 
scholarships for the 2010-11 academic year. Please see your Guidance 
counselor to determine which awards you are eligible for. Visit the Guidance 
office or see Mrs. Woolfolk for scholarship requirements and applications. 
You may also download an application at www.colonialfarmcredit.com. DEADLINE: 
MARCH 1, 2010.

* SENIORS: Super Saturday is scheduled for Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 
various sites across Virginia. The site closest the NHS is St. Paul?s College 
in Lawrenceville, VA. Visit www.VASFAA.org for additional locations. This 
event allows students who are seeking funding for college to receive free one-
on-one assistance in completing the federal financial aid form, (FAFSA) from 
financial aid professionals. Visit the Guidance office for more information 
on Super Saturday, or visit the indicated website.

* SENIORS: SVCC will offer a financial aid workshop on Tuesday, February, 9, 
2010 at 6:30 p.m. at the Christanna Campus, Alberta, John J. Cavan Workforce 
Development Center. Come prepared to complete your FAFSA form on-site. 
(**Must have your personal PIN #, W2 and income tax forms to complete the

* SENIORS- SCHOLARSHIP: The Luther H. Foster Alumni Scholarship Award 
application is now available. Candidates must be enrolled in a 
college/university during the fall 2010 semester. Candidates must have a 
cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better to be considered. Visit the Guidance office 
for additional details. DEADLINE: APRIL 15, 2010.

* Scholarships: Seniors, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is now accepting 
applications for its 2010-11 College Scholarship Award Program. Applicants 
must have lost a parent/guardian to breast cancer or be a breast cancer 
survivor diagnosed at 25 years or younger. For information or to apply, 
please visit

deadline to submit applications if February 15, 2010. See your Guidance 
Counselor for additional details.

* Sophomores & Juniors: Students interested in participating in the 2010 High 
School Summer Scholars Program or the Young Writers Institute offered through 
Washington University in St. Louis please see your Guidance Counselor for 
program eligibility and details. Registration deadline is May 7, 2010.

* Students interested in participating in the ASSE international student 
exchange program visit www.asse.com. See your Guidance Counselor for details.

* Scholarships-Seniors: The Blackstone Three Arts Club is offering two $750 
scholarships to NHS Seniors who have been active in the areas of art, music, 
drama and/or literature and plans to pursue this interest in college (not 
necessarily as a major). Applications are due by March 5, 2010. See your 
Guidance Counselor for an application.

* Scholarships: The Virginia State Golf association (VSGA) scholarship 
application is available for high school seniors. The criteria for a 
scholarship are based on academic achievement, an interest in golf (skill 
level not important), character and financial need. Students who have lived 
in VA since Sept. 1, 2009, who have an interest in golf and will attend 
college within the commonwealth are encouraged to apply. See your Guidance 
Counselor for an application.

* Seniors interested in attending the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and 
pursuing an undergraduate degree program in engineering mathematics, physics, 
computer science or another related scientific field please visit the 
Guidance department for scholarship information.

* SCHOLARSHIP information for the 2009-10 American Legion High School 
Oratorical Scholarship Contest is available in the Guidance office. Students 
in grades 9-12 are eligible. See your counselor for details.


NJROTC Announcements:


¥Cadets traveling to Virginia Beach this weekend for the field meet 
competition at Green Run are to turn in your permission slips and all related 
paper work by tomorrow, January 26th. We don't yet have enough participants 
for the 8x200 abd 16x100 relays. Also, make sure we have your current contact 
information in case weather impacts this event.

¥Rifle Team will meet after school today. New shooters who took and passed 
the range safety course may shoot and other new shooters may attend for more 
safety training.

¥Cadets interested in attending the following summer programs should see LCDR 
Klag for details.

1. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Seminar this summer at either 
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida or the 
University of San Diego in California.

2. Leader Academy at Camp Pendleton.

3. Wilderness Challenge at Camp Mountaineer, WV including mountain biking, 
rappelling and white water rafting.

4. And/or the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ground school licensing 
course.
