VOCABULARY WORDS: The students get their vocabulary on Monday and take a
test on the words Friday. Your child will need to know the meaning, part of
speech, synonyms, antonyms,and be able to put each word in a sentence.

The Language Arts Grade is calculated in the following manner:
Homework & Classwork 55%; Read-Up 10%; Tests 35%.
In Language Arts this year, students will be introduced to over 180 new
vocabulary words in a program called Word of the Day. Five words will be
given Monday of each week and assessed on Friday. Students are required to
know the definition, synonyms, antonyms, part of speech, and correct usage
in a sentence for each. The information is kept by the student in his/her
Language Arts binder. I have included in this announcement the first(30)
vocabulary words for the first six weeks. We will review the words in class
weekly. This year we are adding one literary/figurative language word to the
list. These are words that students should be familiar with for SOL testing.
The literary terms will also be included on the weekly test and in the
review. Please study the words with your child weekly and use as many of
them in conversation as possible.
During the second semester, our language arts classes will review skills in
preparation for the SOL tests. We will use the Virginia SOL
Prep book and the Virginia SOL Coach book to assist with the review.
Students should also be spending 30 minutes each evening reading. Remember
Read-Up counts for 10% of the total Language Arts grade. Progress reports
will be sent every two weeks during the grading period. Please look on the
progress report for an indication of the number of read-up points earned by
