Welcome to English 8.  There is much work to do as we prepare for the Writing 
SOL, which will be given in March 2012, and the Reading SOL 
which will be given in May.  We will complete a variety of projects during 
the school year.

The Accelerated Reader chain link competition between classes is going on 
now.  Students must complete tests with a score of 85% to obtain a ticket and 
a prize from the library.  The student will then record his/her name and the 
name of the book on a chain link.  Once every three weeks, tickets will be 
drawn and students who are chosen will be rewarded.  At the end of the year 
the teacher with the most links in her chain will send eligible students to a 
pizza party in the library.  Each six weeks students who achieve their goal 
will be invited to an ice cream party.  Reading always helps students achieve 
better in all classes.

The 21st Century Community Learning Center is busy with many activities every 
week.  Homework Assistance and Tutoring can be arranged Monday through 
Thursday of each week.  The activity buses are available on Tuesday and 
Thursday afternoons.  Recreation and cultural enrichment activities are 
planned each month.  Check out the calendar that is sent home each month.
