What are the 'Resource Classes'?

'Resource' refers to the classes that your child will attend outside his or
her own grade level or exceptional education classroom. Resource teachers
teach the entire school population - all students who attend Gates.

Which resource classes will my child receive at Gates?

Education classes.

How often will my child attend the resource classes?

Each child attends each resource class once per week. Each resource class
has been scheduled for a different day during the week, and your child's
grade level or exceptional ed. teacher will inform students and parents on
which day of the week each resource class will occur for that class.

Does my child receive a grade for resource classes?

Your child will receive a grade during each nine-week grading period for ART,
MUSIC, and PHYSICAL EDUCATION. Grades are earned for work accomplished
during each grading period, and are not cumulative. Grading in resource
classes is based on the 'E,S,M,N' system, rather than on the 'A,B,C,...'
letter grade model. 'E' - excellent improvement, 'S' - satisfactory
improvement, 'M' - minimal improvement, 'N' - no improvement. Please note
that this grading system in NOT meant to be equivlaent to 'A,B,C' (e.g. 'E'
does not = 'A'). Generally, children earn 'S' in resource classes. This
means that he/she is on task, accomplishing grade level objectives,
demonstrating understanding of concepts taught, completing assignments, etc.
Please also note that children who attend Gates in self-contained exceptional
ed. classes (ECSE, SD, AUTISM) do not receive grades in resource classes. If
your child is in an exceptional ed. class and attends resource classes along
with a grade level class (mainstreamed), he or she will receive resource
grades. Be assured that resource teachers work closely with except. ed.
teachers to encourage each child in accomplishment of individual goals and
objectives. Resource teachers plan lessons that are appropriate for the
needs of each class and each child.

How will I know what my child is doing in resource classes?

The best way to learn about the lessons being taught in resource classes each
week is to ask your child!! We encourage you to ask questions and talk with
your child about what she is learing in each class. This is a wonderful way
to communicate and to help your child review and reinforce knowledge,
concepts, and skills learned in these classes. Also, please go to the
individual resource class home pages on this site. You will find information
on lessons and objectives covered for the previous nine-week grading period.
