O.B. Gates is for Readers!!!
-
We are an OPEN ACCESS library. That means students may use the library to exchange books any time during the day (except 11:45-12:15, librarians lunch) and any day of the week!!
-
Thanks to our PTA, we have READING COUNTS! Students can set goals and improve comprehension by taking quizzes on books they have read.
-
5th graders can participate in the BATTLE OF THE BOOKS competition.
-
New This Year!!! O.B. is the first elementary school to offer flexible scheduling to ALL grade levels, not just 3-5! This means your child will have a fixed time every 2 weeks that they will come to the library and exchange their books. Then, teachers will have the opportunity to schedule longer library lesson times to provide the student more library time than ever with authentic learning opportunities. Their lessons will not be taught in a quick 15 minute lesson, once every week!! It is our hope that our students will learn the life-long skill of using the library with their class, small groups, as well as independently. Please remember, we are an OPEN ACCESS LIBRARY. STUDENTS MAY COME TO THE LIBRARY TO EXCHANGE BOOKS WHENEVER THEY NEED TO DO SO!!!

Research tips for Parents!
Dear O.B.Gates Family!
It is our pleasure as O.B. Gates Librarians to begin working with your children on information seeking skills to begin your child’s path on a lifetime of learning! Information seeking is fun and can lead to wonderful discovery and growth.
As we begin this learning adventure, you, the parent or guardian, can be an invaluable teacher, helping to reinforce the correct methods of gathering information! By learning research in a fun and consistent manner, we can eliminate frustrations and build on your student’s research abilities each year!
In order for us to work effectively together, we are providing the key points you can reinforce at home as your child learns this process.
ü Pick a broad enough topic! Frustrations will be lessened if information is easily obtained! If the report is a book report, select one your student can read on their own!
ü If time permits, don’t jump right into note taking. Let your student enjoy reading or exploring the topic. A new more interesting topic may be found this way as well!
ü Use index cards for note taking! This focuses for your child the information they need to include in the report and can be a guide for the formation of paragraphs if a written report is required. We will model this activity during library time. One is available below!
ü Use as few words as possible to record the information. No sentences should be written during the note taking process.
ü Record the name of the books, author, page number and/or website addresses that the student uses on the back of the index card. This will tell us where the student got their information.
ü When the note cards are complete, have your child sit down and write the report using only their notes from the note cards. No open books or web pages. This insures that the writing will be in their own words. This is so important to reinforce since plagiarism has become a large problem. As we tell the children, “stealing” someone’s words is against the law. If no written paper is required, the cards can serve as an outline for an oral report.
ü Lastly, we have both raised children of our own and do know the hectic life we all lead, but we ask that you encourage your child to take the time to find the information themselves and to complete the report with as little help from you as possible. It may not be as refined or neat as you might like, but it will be wonderful to us. Remember, this is a process and independent learning and self-confidence the result.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if we can be of help!
Thanks for working with us! You are invaluable!
