Letter to Honors 10 Parents

Dear Honors English 10 Parents,

I am excited to be your child's English teacher this year. We have a very busy year planned, and I need your help for your student to be successful. Please read over this letter and keep it for your future reference. Please also read your student’s copy of the Classroom Policies, Procedures, and Expectations, then sign and have your student return the signature sheet.

I would like to briefly introduce myself and outline the Honors 10 course.  I began teaching English at OceanLakesHigh School in 2004. Before becoming a teacher, I worked as a writer and editor in the public relations fields for OldDominionUniversity, GeorgeMasonUniversity and BOAT/U.S. I received my Bachelor’s in English Writing from GeorgeMasonUniversity and teaching certification from OldDominionUniversity.

It is my aim to help students improve their reading comprehension, inquisitiveness and critical thinking, note-taking and communication skills; hone their grammar; and build their vocabulary throughout the year.  There will be a variety of writing assignments as well: creative, personal narratives and literary analyses.  For all major assignments, I will provide a scoring guide to better help them understand what I am using to grade their papers and projects.  I would like to emphasize that I have high—but realistic—expectations for your son/daughter because it is an advanced class.  I will also strive to help with their time management and organizational skills to better prepare them for future academic endeavors.

Communication between us is essential for your student’s success. To stay in touch:

1) Check the class web site: www.teacherweb.com/VA/OLHS/Nery. Homework, study guides, helpful links and lots of other information are posted. To receive text messages or e-mails regarding upcoming tests, projects, or reading assignments, click on the Honors English 10 Newsflash and Subscribe to this NewsFlash.

2) The best way for you to reach me is via e-mail. I check e-mail frequently and will respond to your message promptly. My e-mail address is michelle.nery@vbschools.com.

Homework is usually assigned everyday. Students are responsible for recording their assignments in their planners, but homework is also posted on the website daily. Late work will result in students attending “English Overtime” to complete the assignment for partial credit.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Nery
