Pacing Suggestions: This Webquest will take 3 45 minute sessions.

Pre-requisites: Before reserving one of those sessions in the computer lab, it is suggested that the teacher read Story Painter: The Life Of Jacob Lawrence, by John Duggleby. It is also suggested that the following vocabulary is introduced and discussed:

narrative

abstract

historical fiction

elements and principles of design

culture

Also suggested: introduce Jacob Lawrence, Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad

Grouping Suggestions:

As with any group project, students will group themselves with friends. It is helpful to have a grouping policy, and I have used the "Color Wheel Buddies" as a start (Instructions for Color Wheel Buddies). Because this only groups them in two's, I have to then add a couple of groups together to make groups of four. This is an easy and efficient way to group students so that there is a beneficial mix, so that students can learn and get to know each other.

Special Needs Students:

When grouping, students who are buddies to special needs students need to be grouped together. Therefore, try not to group together more than two special needs students and their partners in one group. Buddy students will be able to assist the special needs students and most of the special needs students are aided by a Para-professional, or teacher aide.
