Mr. Helke has BA in education from Ohio Northern University, a Masters
in Science Education from Old Dominion University, and his gifted
endorsement from UVA. He's taught for 31 years, twentythree of them in
Virginia Beach Schools. Previously, he taught grades 6, 7, and 8 in Ohio as
well as coaching football, wrestling, and track. Since moving to the Beach,
he's coached basketball, soccer, Future Problem Solvers, Science Club,
Invent America, and track. While in Ohio, he began a gifted program at a
small country school with a grant provided by the University of Toledo and
trained in Howard Gardner's "Talents Unlimited".
Mr. Helke loves going to the beach, kayaking, eating, reading and
traveling.
He's married with two children, a daughter that graduated from Virginia
Tech. She attended the University of Manchester, England and received
her Masters in Egyptology, in conjunction with the Museum of London.
She'scurrently working at EVMS doing research. His
son, Brett, is attending school full time, raising a kid, building
cabinets (full time)and, playing/writing music in his spare time.
Mr. Helke's wife is a clinical pharmacist working for Optima Health
Mr. Helke's grandson, Cameron (AKA Keebler) is about 3 years old and
cute as anything! He's programed the DVR and completed our tax return for
this year.
