UNIT III:
ALL TEAMS
Focus: Performance
Theme: Body Parts and how they move.
Students are creating dances based on one or two particular body parts. They
are to use their tools for creating dances to express their theme (body
parts)There will be two showings of the dances, and the teachers will select
dances that best express their theme as well as groups who worked well
together in the creative process.

UNIT II:
EFFORT TEAM
Focus: Form/Structure
Theme: Theme and Variations

UNIT I:
ENERGY TEAM
Focus: Energy
Theme: Movement Qualities
1. Sustain-is smooth and even, the result of a steady equalized release of
energy that excludes any perceptible accent. Requires maximum control.
Quality is similar to honey pouring from a jar; smoke spiraling upward.
Associated feelings are those of calmness, tranquility, or self-control.
2. Percussive-is sharp, aggressive movement in which the energy is applied
with sudden force and then quickly checked. The mov't starts with a quick
contraction of the muscles. Mov't is similar to hammering a nail or striking
a punching bag. Associated feelings are anger, powerful, explosive, or
forceful.
3. Vibratory- is produced by a quick recurring succession of small
percussive movements. Energy is applied in spurts. Range of movement is
slight. Movements such as shaking or quivering. Associated feelings of fear,
cold,or old age.
4. Suspend- is when the pull of two opposing forces are even. The force of
the upward thrust is equal to the downward pull of gravity. Quality of mov't
is of breathlessness, weightlessness, or of soaring. Associated with
excitement or anticipation. (Like a good suspense novel)
5. Fall/Collapse- is the release of tension in any part of the body. Gravity
is permitted to take over. The collapse may be gradual and controlled, as in
a slow fall, or it may be sudden, as in fainting.
6. Swing- is characterized by a pendulum momentum that carries weight.
(Momentum- the force with which the body moves, equal to its mass x its
speed) A swing is done in a 3 beat rhythm. 1. downward impulse 2. gathering
of momentum as moves upward 3. moment of suspension (equal pull in 2
directions) Usually evokes a feeling of freedom, openness, and of ease.
SPACE/SHAPE
beat-an evenly spaced pulse. tempo-the speed of the beat. subdivision-
breaking the beat into even parts. rhythmic pattern-an arrangement of beats,
accents, rests, and pulses.
