COURSE SYLLABUS (LET-4)
Introduction to JROTC, a character of leadership, training, and development
program
1. Purpose: Powhatan High school JROTC program is designed to teach high
school students the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the
community, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment, while
instilling in them self-esteem, teamwork, and self-discipline. Its focus is
reflected in its mission statement, “To motivate young people to be better
citizens.” It prepares high school students for responsible leadership roles
while making them aware of their rights and responsibilities, and privileges
as American citizens.
2. COURSE ORIENTATION
a. SCOPE: JROTC is a high school elective course for 9th thru12th grades.
Students are required to take this class for one year to receive one academic
credit. Cadets must be able to demonstrate knowledge, perception, and the
ability to articulate information.
b. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course includes classroom instruction and laboratory
instruction expanding on the skills taught in LET 1 - 3. It focuses on
creating a positive
leadership situation, negotiating, decision-making, problem solving, planning,
team
development, project management, mentoring and exercises in writing skills.
Emphasizes physical fitness through healthy individual and group competition. The
interactions between groups of people and how they affect the area’s cultural,
economic,
and political characteristics are discussed. It explores various methods on
determining
distance, direction, and locations as well as environmental issues. Concepts of
democracy and freedom and how to influence local governments are discussed.
It provides the opportunity to demonstrate leadership potential in an assigned
command or staff position within the cadet battalion organizational structure.
It includes how to use emotional intelligence in
leadership situations as well as developing a positive attitude, preventing
violence and
managing anger. Provides instruction on etiquette, daily planning, financial
planning,
and careers. The performance standards in this course are based on the performance
standards identified in the curriculum for the US Army JROTC. Successful
completion
of at least three units of credit in the Army JROTC program will qualify the
student for
advanced placement in a college ROTC program or accelerated promotion in the
military
service.
c. Course Objectives: The fourth year course, LET-4 is a continuation of
LET-3 for senior year cadets. It focuses on the military and its history,
purpose, and structure of Army JROTC. It includes advanced instruction on
leadership, first aid, oral communication, map reading, health & physical
fitness, and the development of basic military skills, such as drill and
ceremony and wearing of the uniform.

b. Average Number/Letter Grades
(1) 100 – 93 = A
(2) 92 – 85 = B
(3) 84 – 77 = C
(4) 76 – 69 = D
(5) 68 and below = F
c. Study Guide
(1) Read the assignment before coming to class
(2) Attentive listening is required to articulate understanding of class
lesson
(3) Ask questions when you don’t understand the information
presented
(4) Active participation with peers is required during class instruction
d. Class attendance
(1) Class attendance is highly encouraged for all cadets.
(2) Make-up Work
Students shall be responsible for making up work missed while absent. Students
should request their assignments on the day of their return to school. They
will be given at least the same number of days to make up work as the number
of days missed during the period of absence.

e. Testing
(1) After each lesson students are required to answer review questions and
vocabulary words
(2) Test will follow each class lesson
(3) Final and semester test will be announce at least two weeks in advance
(4) All tests cadets are able to use their cadet notebooks unless the
instructor decides to make a change
